Natural Compounds are Cancer-Killers

Using cultures made from human gastric cancer cells, researchers found that the omega-3 oil DHA markedly enhanced the ability of the chemotherapy drug 5FU to kill cancer cells. In fact, using the chemotherapy drug in conjunction with DHA allowed a dose almost four times lower to kill the cancer cells just as well as the higher dose without the supplement. This finding is important because by lowering the dose of the chemotherapy drug, you can dramatically reduce complications.

Curcumin has been shown to significantly enhance the cancer-killing effect of platinum-based drugs and prevent multidrug resistance. It also enhanced the cancer killing power of a drug used to treat androgen-independent prostate cancer, one of the more deadlier types Vitamins can act synergistically with each other or with flavonoids. For example, one study found that a mixture of carotenoids, or a carotenoid and curcumin, or a carotenoid and vitamin E synergistically inhibited cancer of the prostate and breast. Curcumin has also been shown to reverse chemotherapy drug resistance in highly malignant type cancer cells by making the cancer cells highly sensitive to cell death.

A series of studies showed that EGCG has several important properties that enhance the killing and suppression of cancers – especially resistant cancers. In one study, researchers found that EGCG powerfully inhibited cancer stem cell formation in a highly malignant form of breast cancer. It appears to do this by stopping a cell – signaling mechanism needed by cancer stem cells to grown and invade – which are the very things that make them deadly. This property is critical because the reason chemotherapy fails in so many cases of cancer is that these agents cannot kill cancer stem cells, the source of cancer growth and development. Combining EGCG and curcumin powerfully enhances the killing of highly resistant breast cancer, and significantly enhances the ability of the breast cancer
drug doxorubicin to kill breast cancer cells. EGCG has also been shown to inhibit the invasion and stem cell growth of nasopharyngeal cancers. Another way EGCG inhibits angiogenesis and tumor invasion, both of which are critical to cancer aggressiveness. Suppressing angiogenesis will kill most cancers.

These natural substances also protect surrounding normal cells from being damaged by chemotherapy. Other combinations with curcumin suppress cancer growth, invasion, and spread. For example, combining curcumin and DHA – the omega-3 oil component – alone inhibited all types of breast cancer, even without chemotherapy. Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common types of primary liver cancer, and is linked to certain chronic viral hepatitis infections. A recent study found that combining quercetin with the drug used to treat this cancer greatly enhanced the drug’s cancer killing effects. A series of studies found that a particular nutrient mixture stopped cancer spread by inhibiting the enzymes cancers used to invade surrounding tissue. The studies – which use human tumor cells such as fibrosarcoma, liver cancer, glioblastoma, and uterine cancer – found that a mixture of lysine, ascorbic acid, proline, and green tea extract powerfully inhibited tumor invasion, the process that makes cancers deadly.

This nutrient mixture was also effective against bladder and testicular cancers. The advantage of this nutrient mixture is that it inhibits cancer growth and invasion by a great number of mechanisms, including inhibiting angiogenesis, strengthening tissue barriers to invasion (collagen), stimulating apoptosis (cancer cell suicide), inhibiting enzymes used for invasion, and inhibiting cancer stem cell growth.

Pomegranate Inhibits Prostate Cancer

One of the more potent inhibitors of prostate cancer development, growth, and invasion is silibinin (silymarin compound). It has been shown to increase the ability of doxorubicin to kill bot androgen – dependent and -independent prostate cancer cells. Doxorubicin is a very toxic chemotherapy drug. Combining it with silibinin allows a lower and therefore safer dose without diminishing its ability to kill prostate cancer cells.
Silibinin is quite safe, even in larger doses. It has the added advantage of protecting the liver, which can be damaged by many chemotherapy agents. A final example of it is combined with quercetin and resveratrol, it inhibits leukemia cells. It’s believed that the active component in pomegranate is ellagic acid, which can also be purchased as a pure natural supplement.

It is becoming obvious that complex mixtures of whole herbs and plant extracts, when properly compounded, can control even advanced cancers. One such anticancer mixture was originally made by a Canadian nurse named Rene Caisse. It is now sold as Essiac tea with ingredients that include: burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm bark, Turkish rhubarb, blessed thistle herb, organic red clover blossom. All of those plant extracts contain high concentrations of vitamins, mineral, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and other anticancer compounds, giving Essiac tea powerful anticancer synergy. The tea has been shown to provide long-term control of some advanced cancers. In addition, plant extracts have shown considerable safety and effectiveness.

Using natural substances along with low dose chemotherapy Several herbs and antioxidants cause apoptosis which is cell death of the cancer cells. They also inhibit new blood vessel growth which is called angiogenesis. In addition, invasion and metastasis can be down-regulated and the cancer turned off. It is turned off by influencing genes which actually promote cancer growth. Using natural substances along with low dose targeted chemotherapy will enhance your chance for remission and a positive outcome. Natural substances can prevent chemoresistance and failure.

Antioxidants which are found in natural substances reduce the damage caused by chemotherapy drugs and radiation. In addition, natural substances support the bodies own immune system.

Cancer is an immune failure. Cancer patients have very low immunity and this needs to be measured and raised in every cancer patient. Antioxidants reduce the oxidative stress caused by chemotherapy and repair cell damage in DNA. Cancer patients have high levels of free radicals as well as inflammation and these natural substances help to lower them. When possible I use these natural therapies intravenously to maintain a higher blood levels. Then when the patient leaves the clinic they are placed on an oral program they can continue at home.

Unlike chemotherapy agents, which do not differentiate between normal cells and in cancer cells, anticancer compounds found in medical plants selectively target cancer cells.

In doing so, they not only spare damage to normal cells, they also protect normal cells from damage by chemotherapy agents and radiation. The basis of this protection is the difference in metabolism between cancer cells and normal cells.

Most chemotherapy agents act on one of two mechanisms, which the cancer cell can quickly adapt to. One way cancer cells avoid damage from chemotherapy agents is to use cell mechanisms to expel the chemotherapy agent, thus preventing damage to the cancer cell. Once a cancer cell develops resistance to one chemotherapy drug, it is usually resistant to most of them – a process called multidrug resistance (MDR). Another method of protection cancer cells use is to shut off special suicide genes (p53 and p21 genes) by mutating them. These genes exist in all cells, and are activated when a cell is badly damaged and at a high risk of becoming a cancer cell.

When the cell is killed, it cannot convert into cancer. But when the suicide genes are turned off, the cell becomes immortal, and cancerous. A number of plant extracts can repair the cells’ suicide genes, and thus kill tumor cells. Plant extracts can also reverse multidrug resistance, making the cancer cell vulnerable once again to chemotherapy drugs and other treatments. Plant extracts can also make cancer cells selectively hypersensitive to being killed by radiation treatments, and at the same time protect surrounding normal cells from radiation damage.
